Today I added the below image and caption to the Trombone History Timeline (17th century—first half). The number of angel-trombone images from the first quarter of the 17th century alone is remarkable and reflects the role of the trombone as an important sacred instrument in both the Catholic and Protestant religious traditions.
I have also added this picture and caption to the collections of images in Angel Trombonists throughout History (where there are now 78 examples) and How to Hold a Sackbut: The Grip of the Early Trombone in Pictures (where there are now 72 examples).
c. 1625—Porto Valtravaglia, Italy: An angel-trombonist is included among a group of angel musicians in a fresco in the Cappella Porta of the church of Santa Maria Assunta (see detail and full image below; public domain).
