In Listening to the Orchestra, Kitty Barne writes, “The trombone is associated in our minds with the oom-pah of the bass of marching songs like ‘Onward, Christian Soldiers,’ or the blaring out of tunes in a way that drowns everything else, and we are apt to think of it as a vulgarian” (Barne).
