Historian Adam Carse writes the following about contemporary trends in trombone performance: “More than the instrument, it is the style of playing that has changed most. There is every reason to believe that the overwhelming forte or fortissimo of the trombones in a modern orchestra was a thing quite unknown before last century, and that if such sounds had been produced, they would have been condemned as intolerably coarse and inartistic” (Carse, Musical 261).
