Sigmund Spaeth, in The Art of Enjoying Music, says, “The trombones have a definite blaring sound, easily distinguished by ear, in addition to the dramatic action of their sliding technique. Comedy effects, such as the hyena laugh, etc., have been introduced into modern popular music for the trombone” (Spaeth 91).
