Darius Milhaud visits London, where he hears live jazz—Billy Arnold and his band from New York—and is impressed with the “extremely subtle…use of timbre,” including “the lyrical use of the trombone, glancing slidingly over quartertones in crescendos of volume and pitch, thus intensifying the feeling” (Fisk 310).
