Emperor Joseph II issues a decree requiring, among other things, that musical expenses at all Viennese churches be disclosed. The resulting list shows that, of the 32 Viennese church orchestras for which orchestra members are listed by name, 10 include a pair of trombones. By comparison with other winds, only 2 orchestras include oboes, only 1 a bassoon, and none include horns (Edge).*
