Trombone is apparently unusual enough that a writer in the periodical Almanach musical mentions the instrument in the context of musical novelties, saying, “Mr. Gluck has successfully used in the orchestra some instruments that produce a very imposing effect. These instruments are called ‘trombones’; they furnish sustained and full sounds” (Guion, Trombone 177).
