Date marked on a rare soprano trombone owned by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The inscription on the instrument reads, “JOHANN JOSEPH SCHMIED MACHTS IN PFAFFENDORF 1781.” Soprano trombones never attract widespread use, possibly because of intonation difficulties (Young 104).
