Frenchman Jean Benjamin La Borde, writing about trombone, says, “It is much used in German church music. The manner of writing for them is the same as for voices, and the trombones have the same range….This instrument makes its greatest effect in funeral marches and, in general, sad music” (Guion, Trombone 73).
