Jean-Jacques Rousseau, in his Encyclopédie, our Dictionnaire raisonné, says the following about the trombone: “It serves as the bass in all kinds of consorts of wind instruments, as do the serpent and the bassoon, and it serves as baritone to the oboe” (Guion, Trombone 67).
