According to local legend, trombones ward off an Indian attack in the early morning of Christmas Day. Indians supposedly interpret the sounds of the Moravian trombone choir playing a chorale as a sign that the Great Spirit will protect the Moravians and abandon their plans for an attack (Carter, Trombone Ensembles of the Moravian).
