St. Florian, Austria: Anton Bruckner composes his Zwei Aequale for trombone trio, motivated by the death of his godmother, Rosalie Mayrhofer. This specific work and similar music is performed at the outer gate of St. Florian’s monastery, where the dead are placed until a priest undertakes the consecration. Although only the first of the Bruckner’s two aequale can be precisely dated, it is generally assumed that they were written at the same time. The bass trombone part for the second aequali is lost but has been reconstructed by musicologist Hans Bauernfeind (Kinder 8).
