Michael Beheim writes, “There was also the custom,/When a large cannon was around,/That with the same arms they would shoot a round/Just as in the town there were/Trombones and trumpets./And also the loud noises of timpani,/Which resounded throughout the town,/And when the sound was over,/Then from the house/They discharged their rifles./This was done a great deal” (Bowles, Timpani 356).
