Hector Berlioz conducts his Symphonie funebre et triomphale in Dresden. He sends a message to Antoine Dieppo, the French trombonist for whom the second movement solo was written, saying that he had not found Dieppo’s equal, and that German trombonists had given him “chest-ache, not to mention ear-ache” (Macdonald 227).
