Extant Alto Trombone. Maker: C. F. Sattler; Location: Leipzig, Germany; Key: E-flat; Holder: Museum of Musical Instruments, Leipzig University. Three trombones by C. F. Sattler (later labeled 4137, 4138, 4139 by the museum) form a tuned choir and are acquired in 1841 for the music of St. Thomas and St. Nicholas Churches. In an inventory compiled around 1845 (Leipzig City Archives), the instruments are listed simply, without further details, as “a new choir of trombones.” At that time, they are located in the instrument cabinet of St. Thomas School and kept by the cantor of St. Nicholas Church, A. E. Müller. Later, the instruments are moved to St. Nicholas Church and from there, in 1974, along with two cellos and a pair of timpani, are donated to the museum.
