Dietrich Buxtehude’s Auf, stimmet die Saiten, Gott Phoebus tritt ein (BuxWV 116), written for the wedding of Heinrich von Kirchring (mayor of Lübeck) and Agneta von Stiten, calls for 2 “trombetti in sordino” and 2 trombones “in sordino” (Smithers, Baroque 254). This is an early example of the use of trombone mutes (Herbert Trombone 27).
