An instrument that can be categorized as both the oldest surviving bass trombone and the oldest surviving non-German trombone is manufactured (Baines, Brass 111). Made by Pierre Colbert of Rheims, it contains an extension handle for operating the extremely long slide (instrument held in Gemeente Museum, The Hague) (Bessaraboff 191; Montagu 105). Herbert lists an older bass trombone (1579), made in Nuremberg and held in Accademia Filarmonica, Verona (Herbert, Trombone 311).
