Dr. John Case, in his Praise of Musicke, mentions sackbut: “What shall I speak of the Lute, Citterne, Violle, Rebeck, Gittorne, Pandore, Dulcimer, Organes, Virginals, Flute, Fife, Recorders, of the Trumpet, Cornet, Sackbut, and infinite other sortes so excellent & pleasant in their sundrie kinds, that if art be any way faultie for them, it is for being too riotous and superfluous” (Newton, English Lute Music).
