John Howes recommends that the children of the school called Christ’s Hospital, later known as the Bluecoat School, “…learn to singe, to play upon all sorts of instruments, as to sounde the trumpet, the cornet, the recorder or flute, to play upon shagbolts, shalmes, & all other instruments that are to be plaid upon, either with winde or finger” (Boyd 15).
