A poem documenting festivities upon the return of Charles V from Italy mentions trombones [sacabuches]: “Play trompas and atabales,/Sacabuches and chirimias./Grand feasts and music/Make with unspeakable joy./Let’s erect triumphal arches,/Knights and officials,/All in order,/Some playing and dancing,/Others in royal jubilation” (Meyer, Crumhorn 20; Carter, Trombone Renaissance 330; Boydell, Crumhorn 390).
