Martin Luther, in a letter to John Lange (who had been entreating Luther to suppress a book he was publishing), mentions Lange’s use of trombone as a metaphor: “If my little book, that you, my father, name a trombone [posaune], is really so fierce, I leave you and others to judge” (Luther-Currie 55).
