Compensation is “paid to [the singers] of the domestic court of our said lord, the archduke [i.e. Philip the Fair], and to Hans Nagel and Jan van Winckel, players of instruments of our said lord, for, by command of our lady of Savoy [Margaret of Austria], having served continually for our said lord in his chapel in singing and playing daily in discant the hours and divine service” (Polk, Instrumental; Edmond Vander Straeten, Les Ménestrels aux Pays-Bas du XIIIe au XVIIIe siècle, vol. VII). Nagel and van Winckel are both primarily trombonists.
