A German trombonist is hired for the town wind band (pifferi). The superiority of foreign instrumentalists is an accepted fact in Italy: this same year, officials in Florence actually pass a motion that only foreign musicians may be members of the pifferi (Polk, Foreign 326; McGee, Service).
