Cesar van Everdingen includes what appears to be a trombone among several instruments at the bottom of the image in his painting, Four Muses and Pegasus on Parnassus. Although it is impossible determine with certainty, the instrument may be an alto trombone, given its size relative to the surrounding instruments (see below image; public domain) (Huis ten Bosch, The Hague).
