Widely-recognized British musicologist Donald Tovey writes a series of articles for Encyclopaedia Britannicathat are subsequently collected into the now-classic Forms of Music. Tovey complains,“For lack of the alto trombone many of Beethoven’s top notes must nowadays be lowered; and then our smart young orchestrators blame Beethoven for his ill-balanced chords” (Tovey 81).
