Front and Center: Another Trombone-Playing Angel

Today I added the below caption and image to the Trombone History Timeline (16th century). I will also be adding it to Angel Trombonists Throughout History: 56 Images. I think it’s a striking painting that really features the trombone. I wish I could find an image with a little higher resolution and a little better angle. The book I mention in the caption has a photo with a more direct angle, but the picture is black and white and smaller than this one.

Another Angel Trombonist in the Clouds

I just added the below entry and pictures to the Trombone History Timeline (17th century—first half). It is an engraving after an image by Peter Candid (also known as Peter de Witte and Pietro Candido). For more trombone images by Candid, see here. As you can see, it features yet another angel trombonist; for many more pictures of angels playing trombone, see Angel Trombonists Throughout History.

 

1615—Munich, Germany (?): Allegory of the Immaculate Conception, an engraving by Raphael Sadeler (1584-1632) after Peter Candid (also known as Peter de Witte and Pietro Candido), includes an angel trombonist among a group of musical angels (see detail and full image below image;  public domain). Angels at San Stefano, Vicenza

I recently added this painting and caption to the Trombone History Timeline (17th century—1st half). The painting is quite striking, consisting of only four musicians and featuring a beautiful contrast in colors. The trombone in the picture has an extra loop of tubing on the rear bow, making it look remarkably similar to a modern f-attachment instrument.

Another Angel-Trombonist in Milan

1615—Milan, Italy: Bartolomeo Roverio’s painting at Santa Maria church, Chiaravalle Abbey, features an angel-trombonist among a number of other angel-musicians (see below image; public domain) (Die bemalten Orgelflügel 360).

Renaissance Trombone Art: 1 Artist, 3 Names, 3 Images

I recently added the second image below to the Trombone History Timeline (16th Century). It’s by Pieter de Witte (c. 1548-1628), also known as Peitro Candido and Peter Candid. He was probably born in the Low Countries, grew up and trained in Italy, then spent his career in Italy and Germany. He seemed to have an affinity for depicting trombone players in his art work. The other two images shown below are also by the same artist. The dates for the three art works, from top to bottom, are c. 1575, 1593, and 1611.

Angel Trombonist in Italian Switzerland

I just added the below image and caption to the Trombone History Timeline (17th century, first half). I also added it to the HubPages articles Angel Trombonist Throughout History and How to Hold a Sackbut: The Grip of the Early Trombone in Pictures. It’s nice to see the trombone front and center. Serpents & Ophicleides: 16 New Historical Images

I recently added 16 more images of serpents and ophicleides to the post Serpents & Ophicleides: History and Images, bringing the total to 120 images. I’m not sure if you can find that many historical pictures of serpents and ophicleides anywhere else, at least in any one place. Are there any trends to be seen in the depictions? Well, first of all, they are overwhelmingly French. Second, it is easy to divide the pictures into two broad categories: religious and military. Third, in the mid-to-late 19th century, you start to see more and more humorous depictions and caricatures, which is a trend I think you can see in music iconography in general. Here are the 16 new images, along with their captions:

 

c. 1590—Milan, Italy: Aurelio Luini depicts a cherub concert in his fresco in Milan’s San Simpliciano. The cherub to the immediate right of the trombonist may be playing a very small serpent (see below image; public domain) (Kendrick, Sounds of Milan 77 [black & white version]).

1762-1765—Paris, France: Denis Diderot includes the below graphic of the serpent in his famous Encyclopédie (see below image; public domain).

1809-1837—France: A printed entitled Planche de militaires, published by Jean-Baptiste Castiaux, includes a depiction of a military serpent player (see below image; public domain) (Paris, Museum of Civilization in Europe and the Mediterranean).

1825-50—Strasbourg, France: A watercolor by Wurtz and Pees, part of a collection of military figurines, depicts a serpent player of the regiment of mounted grenadiers of the Imperial Guard (see below image; public domain) (Paris, musée de l’Armée).

1850-1875—France: Musique d’infanterie française, a color lithograph printed by Pellerin, includes 3 ophicleide players among the infantry musicians (see below image–click picture for larger version; public domain) (Paris, Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilization).

1862—Paris, France: A print by Jules Gaildrau entitled Fête des mécaniciens de la marine Impériale is published in the periodical L’Illustration. It includes an ophicleide among the band instruments at the celebration (see detail and full image below, after a sketch by Letuaire; public domain) (Dec 27, 1862, p. 432).

1867—Paris, France: A print after a drawing by Letuaire depicts the funeral convoy of Commander John Cornwall, US Navy, who died aboard the Miantonomah in Toulon Harbor. Among the musicians in the procession are a pair of ophicleides (see detail and full image below; public domain) (L’Illustration, March 2, 1867, p. 140).

c. 1875—Paris, France:  Choeur de six personnages en costume ecclésiastique devant un lutrin, a pen and ink drawing by French painter and illustrator Charles Henri Pille, features an ophicleide player accompanying 5 singers, all of them in religious garb (see below image;  public domain) (Paris, The Louvre).

1897—Paris, France: A comic by Henriot (pseudonym for cartoonist Maigrot Henry) features an ophicleide being used to hold champagne by soldiers of the Préobrajensky regiment, a prestigious regiment of the Russian Imperial Guard. The caption reads, “La musique du régiment de Préobrajensky.—Encore des patriotes qui ont fourré dans ton ophicléide six bouteilles de champagne!—Je comprends maintenant pour quoi il ne voulait pas jouer!” (see below image; public domain) (L’Illustration, Nov 20, 1897).

Better Cherub Image, Plus 2 Additional Views

I recently found a clear color image of the trombone-playing cherub in Milan’s San Simpliciano. I have replaced the old, blurry, black and white image in the Trombone History Timeline (16th century) and in the HubPages article, Trombone History: Cherubs Playing the Trombone (where you can view 10 additional depictions of cherub-trombonists). An interesting side note: the cherub to the right of the trombonist may actually be playing a serpent; if so, it would be a very early visual depiction of the instrument.

More Angel-Trombonists

The top image by Roncalli was posted several weeks ago, but I recently added the bottom two images to the Trombone History Timeline. They are apparently all part of the same set. Readers may be interested in seeing more angel-trombonists here, and more depictions of the grip of the early trombone here.

c. 1610—Loreto, Italy: Artist Cristoforo Roncalli, known as “Pomarancio,” makes a set of preparatory red chalk drawings for a fresco to be painted on the cupola of the Basilica di Loreto (fresco now largely lost). Among the drawings are several angel-trombonists (see below 3 images; public domain) (Chiappini Di Sorio 194).

Angel Trombonist from Malta

I recently added another angel trombonist to the 17th Century of the Trombone History Timeline and to the HubPages article, Angel Trombonists throughout History. This image is from Malta, an island off Italy. Here it is, along with its caption:

1661-66—Valletta, Malta: Artist Mattia Preti includes an angel-trombonist in his fresco on the apse of San Giovanni (see below image; public domain) (photo by Alfred Gouder).

The same artist, Mattia Preti, included trombone in another painting. Here it is, along with its caption, below. You can see that the paintings are similar. Notice that the unusual grip of the trombone is similar in the two paintings.
